Saturday in Milano

12 Apr

Saturday match

Last Saturday, we went to Milan to watch a football match with our good friend. (Of course, why else?)

Anto at the game

I don’t think we’ve ever been to Milan without visiting the San Siro.

Go Milan

We did leave without a new scarf for, I think, the first time.

Polizia hard at work

A place I do try to visit every time we’re in Milan is Luini Luini.

See the Italian cops up there hard at work? It’s a universal truth.

Milan street food

Luini’s sells panzerotti. They are a sweet kind of fried dough stuffed with savory fillings.

Oh, Lordy. Deep fried heaven.

Panzerotti

This time, I went with mozzarella, tomato, and pesto. I do not regret it.

If you are ever in Milan, Luini’s is a MUST eat.

Big Mike’s

Big Mike's

Last week I told my husband I had been wanting a burger. I said we should go to Five Guy’s over the weekend while we’re in Leesburg. The hubs said, ok, but if we don’t get around to it we can go to Big Mike’s.

Big Mike's

I’d never heard of it. In fact when I drove up I thought, this is it?

Big Mike's

I’m so glad I waited.

Seattle Eats

Cecilia and I mostly made coffee at home last week in Seattle. She did take me out for a few to-go cups and the best by far was my latte from Satellite Coffee in Tacoma. I also scored a blueberry scone. I did a bite-sip-bite kinda eating of these two treats together. It was perfect.

Ivar’s was my token Seattle seafood spot.

Fried calamari for the table. It was so good we had to order two. The little squids came with this spicy dipping sauce that was reminiscent for me of Outbacks dipping sauce for the bloomin’ onion. I have a refined palate. What can I say?

IMG_2072

I got a salmon BLT on focaccia bread. Amazing. Oh, and don’t worry. I didn’t eat those fries. I ate 2 plates of calamari instead. Such a good decision on my part.

At the famous Pike Place Market we stopped for some piroshkis at Piroshky Piroshky.  A piroshki is a Russian baked good that can be sweet or savory.  I chose savory.

Behold the cheddar cheese, garlic, and green onion piroshky. As we mooched free slices of fruit from the cute sample givers at the market, I couldn’t stop mmmm-ing and aug-ing this cheesy carbfest. Another great decision on my part.

The day before I left we went to Cascade bagels. Oh, holy chewiness. These bagels are fresh baked daily. I got the orange cranberry with a cup of coffee. The coffee was great too. I even ordered a blueberry bagel to go to make my lunch for the flight back.  So many great decisions last week.

Seattle, hopefully I’ll be back soon to explore and enjoy more of your great foods.

Happy National Pancake Day

27 Sep

We're at the beach.

We're eating pancakes.

Chocolate crunch (chocolate chip and pecans) for me.

Banana and blueberry for others.

Delicious for all.

Vacation Mix

22 Sep

Tomorrow is the first day of fall, so you know what that means: Family vacation to the beach.

I'm leaving my husband behind (he couldn't get out of army school) and going with my parents, brother and his family and his in-laws to Nags Head.  We're renting a house for the week and will be buying and making most of our food (excited!).  I'm planning to steal my parents computer nightly so be expecting posts.

I'm starting the week right with my own miss mashed version of semi healthy trail mix or whatever I had in my pantry I could throw in a bag and take to the beach with me.

In the mix:

toasted unsweetened coconut
rice chex
seaseme covered almonds
yogurt covered almonds
chocolate covered sunflower seeds

Blueberry Friday

I'm going to be a houseguest again this weekend.  By myself this time.  At my parents house.  That doesn't give me an excuse to be rude and not bring something to show how much I appreciate my parents housing me so I don't have to go to a baseball game with my husband in Baltimore.

Hey, don't judge.  I'm not snooty.  I've been to more professional soccer games in Europe than I can remember, tons of rugby games, 2 boxing fights, a formula 1 race, horse races.  I've even been to baseball games in the past, but now that's where I draw the line.  See, most European sports are timed.  They have a foreseeable end.

Baseball… does not.  Luckily we're near family and a whole host of DeMarco's are happy to go with the hubs to the game.

Which leads me to the blueberry scones I made for my parents from Mama Pea's book.  I'm not going to republish the recipe here in hopes you'll buy her now NYT bestselling book.

Just know mine aren't vegan.  All the places where she said, "Use nondairy milk, cheese, butter, etc."  I used regular ol'milk, cheese, butter, etc.

New Year’s Resolutions Still Live!

29 Mar

Last week I made pulled pork for the first time.  I'm not sure why, but making BBQ freaked me out.  I thought it was going to be a long complicated process.  But it only took 3 steps:

  1. Buy pork butt and giggle at name.
  2. Put in crock pot and cover in BBQ sauce.
  3. Cook for hours and hours while at work.
Then I got to come home and toast up some toasty rolls and eat BBQ for the next 11 days.  It was so easy and so amazing that afterwards I made strawberry shortcakes to celebrate.  I was the only one celebrating however since the hubs didn't partake.

I used to have this problem where I'd feel guilty eating something sweet if everyone around me wasn't eating something sweet too.  If no one wanted dessert, then I wouldn't order dessert either.

I outgrew that problem 13 pounds ago.

Roman Food

10 Feb

Img_1219

The first few times I went to Rome I didn't eat that well.  I was in Italy's capital and was shocked.  SHOCKED.  At first I blamed it on eating in the touristy areas.  But not this time.  I ate great.

I know a secret.  It's two words and I'm going to tell you: tavola calda.

Tavola calda, or hot table in English, are buffet style restaurants where the food is fresh and the menu changes daily.  When we ate here we only heard Italian being spoken, a very good sign.  These can be deceiving because they look like take away places, but the checkered covered tables are in the back or up the narrow stairs.

The pasta pictured above is what I had the last day for lunch.  I told my husband I thought it was a leftover kinda dish.  They threw all the odds and ends they had together and made a salty sweet pasta.  The salty from the sausage played off the sweet peas.  Nom.

Coffee Sugar Cookies

8 Feb

I know y'all folks are expecting a Rome trip rugby update.  And I promise, it's coming soon.  Good things come to those who wait and all that jazz.  But I couldn't not tell you about these cookies I made this morning for Bible study.

Coffee sugar cookies from i am baker.  Oh man, I'm not sure if it's all the cookie dough I ate or all the broken heart cookies but these things are making me super excited to be alive.  Why?  Because there are fresh coffee grounds in them.  Yowza!

Please make these then take them to your preferred group event in a shoe box so you can be awesome like me.

This is the first time Nigella has ever failed me.  Nigella, my love, my aspiration, my older British twin.  I tried to make her mustard pork chops and stunk up my whole house.  Luckily the pork chops were not lost since you don't combine the mustard sauce and pork chops until the end.  We just had pan fried pork chops with pesto fettuccine, which was perfectly fine.  I wasn't looking for fine.  I was looking for amazing Nigellian mustard pork chops.

Small disclaimer: I might not have used every EXACT ingredient that Nigella called for.  I may have used honey dijon mustard when she said "grain mustard" and I may have used apple cider vinegar when she called for "hard cider".  Ahem.  But! I'm sure that Nigella didn't get where she is by playing it safe and FOLLOWING recipes.  Even when those recipes have only 4 ingredients and it's probably paramount to get said ingredients and not just things that kinda SOUND like those ingredients.  Adventure!  I was embodying the spirit of Nigella for pete's sake. End disclaimer.

First sign that my (not Nigella's) mustard sauce was a failure?  I leaned over the pan to smell if it was coming together and the concoction burned my nostrils.  BURNED them, folks.  So I decided a taste test was in order because a.) Nigella had never failed me and b.) maybe my nose was wrong.

Folks, they say the nose knows for a reason.

Now the worst part.  Admitting to my adoring husband that the mustard sauce I had him pick up heavy cream for on the way home from work was inedible.  So I told him.  He said, "I'm so glad you think it tastes bad because it smells TERRIBLE."  Fundamental of marriage: honesty.  After washing my mouth out, I gave him a big kiss and we ate dinner.
